Every Monday, we pay off a stranger's student loan.

One member is drawn live at 8pm ET. Everyone chips in for a week through GoFundMe. They pay their loan, and we post the receipt. Next time, the name could be yours.

How a week works

Four steps, start to finish, and every one happens in public.

  1. You enter

Fill out the short form and follow us on Instagram or TikTok. That's your entry, and it carries over every week.

  2. Monday, 8pm ET

We draw one name on a livestream. The person drawn has 24 hours to verify their loan, or we draw again.

  3. A week of giving

We set up a GoFundMe with them as the beneficiary, and the whole community chips in for seven days. Give what you can, or just share it. Both help.

  4. Paid, with proof

GoFundMe releases the money to them. They pay their servicer within 7 days and send us the confirmation. We post the receipt, and the next Monday we do it again.

We never touch a dollar.

That isn't a slogan. We built the whole thing so we can't touch the money. We have no account for it to sit in and take no fee from it.

Each week's GoFundMe names the person drawn as its beneficiary, so GoFundMe pays them directly. Never us. They pay their servicer, and we post the confirmation publicly. If the money isn't used to pay their loan, donors can ask GoFundMe for a refund under its Giving Guarantee.

Fair questions

Is this a scam?

Fair to ask. We never collect money, so there's nothing for us to run off with. Each week's funds go into a public GoFundMe that names the person drawn as beneficiary, so GoFundMe pays them, not us. We post every payment receipt.

What stops the person drawn from keeping the money?

Three things. Before their GoFundMe goes live, they agree in writing to pay their servicer within 7 days and send us the confirmation, which we post. The GoFundMe states that purpose, so if the money isn't used for it, donors can ask GoFundMe for a refund under its Giving Guarantee. And anyone who doesn't post proof is removed from all future drawings.

Do I have to donate to be entered?

No. Entering is free, and your entry carries over every week. Donating is optional and never changes your chances. Everyone has the same odds every week.

What happens if I'm drawn?

We'll contact you right after the livestream. Within 24 hours, send a selfie holding your username and the date written on paper, plus a screenshot of your loan servicer dashboard. Once you're verified and agree to pay your servicer within 7 days, your GoFundMe goes live with you as the beneficiary. If we can't verify you in 24 hours, we draw again.

Will it pay off my whole loan?

It pays whatever the community raises that week, minus any GoFundMe processing fees, and all of it goes to your loan. As the collective grows, each week's fund grows with it. That's why sharing matters.

Are you the Debt Collective?

No. The Debt Collective is a debtors' union working on policy and organizing, and we support what they do. We're a separate, smaller project: direct mutual aid, one borrower at a time.
